My Other New Friend

Though I still mourn the grievous death of Diet Vanilla Coke (no, Vanilla Coke Zero ain’t the same), at long last something has come along to help fill some of that void and take the pain away — Diet Cherry Chocolate Dr. Pepper!

Behold my new fizzy beverage companion!

When I spotted it on the shelf, I was instantly drawn to it. A lot of it had to do with the graphic design on the cans and the box…so fun and perky, and the color scheme is wonderful! Then the flavor combination sounded so intriguing…chocolate sodapop? Could it be done?? (YooHoo does NOT count, don’t be emailing me about it.) How would it taste? I had to know.

I can tell you unequivocally that Diet Cherry Chocolate Dr. Pepper tastes…delightful! I am actually NOT a fan of Vanilla Cherry Dr. Pepper; the vanilla just was ‘off’, or clashed too much with the inherent taste of the Dr. Pepper. But the chocolate…now that works!

Does it taste like fine European 70% cacao high-quality chocolate? No, of course not. Nor would you really want it to…this is sodapop here, not hot cocoa. But it also does not taste like YooHoo, thank gawd. It’s hard to describe how Dr. Pepper manipulated the chocolate flavor, but they did a good job. It isn’t overwhelming, it isn’t all thick and goopey, and it isn’t completely unnatural. It’s more of a ‘chocolately’ flavor, or a suggestion of chocolate than true authentic chocolate flavor. The most apt comparison I can make is that it tastes a lot like a Tootsie Roll. Imagine if they made cherry-flavored Tootsie Rolls, then carbonate that, and you’ll get the idea. It complements and blends with the underlying Dr. Pepper flavor very well, and the end result is one hell of a tasty, happy-making drink whose very can makes me feel cheerful!

I’m hooked! (Until the inevitable day when they pull it from the shelves. Did you see the hated phrase “Limited Edition” on the can? *shudder*) I may just start stockpiling now.
