I Love the 80′s Drive-By Hotting: Elegiac Edition

Harken ye back to those fleeting golden days circa 1988 to the early 90′s when, yea, James Hetfield was like unto a god. Remember that? It was the era of And Justice For All.. then followed up by “the black album“, and Metallica was everywhere you looked. They’d just started putting out videos, then there was that massive Binge & Purge concert movie (damn right I own it!) and it seemed like every other video on MTV was some live ‘tallica footage or other, and every time you’d look up you’d see James up there, striding around with an air of command, hair streaming in the wind, kicking ass and inciting his followers to violence through the sheer animal force of his charisma like some really sexy, sweaty, guitar-wielding Viking.

Remember? It made me feel kinda dirty, but I loved it.

Given what was to happen to Metallica in the following years, it makes me cry in my mead. It makes me wanna bust out some Anglo-Saxon ubi sunt poetry, in fact.

Alas for the mailed warrior!
Alas for the splendour of the prince!
How that time has passed away,
dark under the cover of night,
as if it had never been!

Where now the horse and the rider? Where is the horn that was blowing?
Where is the helm and the hauberk, and the bright hair flowing…

Where? Where, indeed?
