That’sa Spicy Cookie!

I ripped this recipe out of a Better Homes & Gardens that I found in a bed-n-breakfast this past summer, and just got around to trying it out. Verdict: Yum! The combination of sweet and spicy always intrigues me. I must warn you though, these cookies are NOT for the flavor-phobic. If your favorite taste sensation is “bland”, stay away.

3 Pepper Spice Cookies

1/2 cup butter, softened
1 cup sugar
1 1/2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp Ancho chile
1/2 tsp black pepper
1/2 tsp ginger
1/2 tsp cloves
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1/4 – 1/2 tsp cayenne
1 egg
1 Tbsp. Milk
2 cups flour

Topping:
10 oz dark chocolate, coarsely chopped
1Tbs. shortening
1. Cream butter and sugar, add baking powder and spices. Beat until combined. Beat in egg and milk, then beat in flour until combined. If necessary, knead dough slightly to blend. Shape dough into a ball and divide in half. Shape each half into a 6 1/2 inch-long roll. Wrap in wax paper and refrigerate for 4 – 24 hours.
2. Preheat oven to 375. Cut dough rolls into 1/4 in. slices. Place slices 1 inch apart on ungreased cookies sheets. Sprinkle with additional black pepper. Bake 8 – 10 minutes, until edges are golden. Cool on wire racks.
3. In a small saucepan, melt chocolate and shortening over low heat, stirring occasionally. Dip each cookie halfway in chocolate; shake off excess. Cool on waxed paper until chocolate is set.

wow..does that sound interesting. I have to admit, I’d probably be one of those wimps that would shy away from a cookie like that! ;-)

Hi, I just finished making peanut butter cookies with some dried pepper flakes from peppers from our garden. They turned out wonderful. My husband is Hungarian and really loves spicy things. I’m going to try your recipe next. Sounds delicious.

Seeing as I in in Texas, and that our Halloween Contest at work is for Most Original, Scariest, Best Tasting….I thought I’d give these a go! The batter was far easier to make than I thought for a baking novice, and the batter tastes like a “Red Hot”, I’ve added Toffee Bits for a bit of crunch and will be calling these “Howling at the Moon” cookies. Cross your fingers cuz I hope to burn their taste buds all the way to the Winners Circle. This recipe was just what I was looking for!!

Update, Man those were easy breezy to make. I changed them up a bit with sprinkle of Ancho Powder on some- what a kick. While I didn’t win a prize, I did get Honorable mention for best tasting…..and My husbands office wants me to make them every holiday. Nothing’s better than watching their Tastebuds come alive. I nicknamed them Howling Moons, where bland dies and Tastebuds come to life. These will for sure now be a sweet staple and what I send out as holiday gifts this year. Thank you So Much for Posting them!!!
