This is how bored I am…

I’m writing a blog post about Nabisco Newton cookies.  WHEN CAN I SEE A MOVIE?!

I rarely buy mass-produced cookies, but we were out and I didn’t feel like baking.  I was browsing the cookie aisle and nothing appealing was on sale (I’m cheap.  If I’m going to buy over-processed crap, I’m not paying a lot for it.  I’m cheap AND stuck-up.)

Then my eyes lit upon New! Newtons Fruit Thins Cookies (so new they aren’t even on Nabisco’s website yet.)

Package describes them as “crispy cookies” and they come in four flavors:  Blueberry Brown Sugar, Fig & Honey, Cranberry Citrus Oat, and Chocolate Raspberry.

Ordinarily, if you want to put me right off a cookie, just use the word “crisp.”  Or “crunchy.”  These words are pure anathema and heresy to my chewy-centric cookie dogma.  And also, a lack of chocolate is usually unforgivable.  But, they were on sale.  And I was pleasantly surprised by the nutrition label, AND I really, really love blueberries.  So I decided to try the Blueberry Brown Sugar flavor.

Verdict:  LOVE!  At least this flavor.

There’s something very British about these cookies, and I think that factor is what makes them overcome their many handicaps for me.  They’re from that British school of not-terribly-sweet, yet appealingly-textured tea biscuits.  They remind me a bit of a shortbread, but even more of an oatcake, but without being as overwhelmingly buttery as either.  That’s not a bad thing, though, as the very very delicious blueberry flavor steps up to the plate instead.  The flavor balance is excellent, and they’re made with real dried blueberries so it’s not that “Boo-Berry” WTF flavor you find in lesser mass-produced crap.

As I said, not too sweet (amazing for mass-produced crap) — I think these would go down amazingly well with tea (if you like tea), as a mid-day coffee break treat, and I even think you could pass these cookies off as breakfast with a side of yogurt.  I’ve had FAR sweeter and more junk-filled “granola bars”, and don’t get me started on Pop-Tarts.  As cookies go, they are borderline good for you…

Three cookies is a serving, which is nice, a those three cookies contain only 8 grams of sugar and 5 of fat.  They’ve got no HFCS, and the other ingredients include whole grain wheat flour, oats, dried blueberries, and get this…flax seeds!

I liked them so much I went back and picked up one of the other flavors while they were still on sale.  I know without tasting them that I will love the Cranberry Citrus Oat, so instead I got the Chocolate Raspberry.

I should have known better.  Chocolate and the British school of not-terribly-sweet, yet appealingly-textured tea biscuits, while each wonderful in their own rights, do not mix.  The chocolate flavor was not rich enough to make it a satisfying chocolate cookie, but it was strong enough to mask the fruit, oat, and other British qualities of the cookie.  The result was a bastard mutant hybrid that had none of the good qualities of either of its parents.

Hasn’t put me off of this cookie line, though.  Stick with the fruity-oaty ones and you’ll enjoy.  I’m still very looking forward to the Cranberry flavor.  Sale ends tomorrow, oh no!
