Title aside, this is NOT a post about Shaun White, Sidney Crosby, JStaal or Russell.

This post is about these cookies!

These may be the best freaking cookies I’ve made in my bloody life.  A little background.  I love sour cherries.  I found some dried sour cherries at Trader Joes and my first thought was to put them in oatmeal cookies.  But I personally think that sour cherries are made to go with dark chocolate.  Soooo, I searched around for a chocolate-oatmeal cookie recipe, found one on, and made some mods.

The result is omfgunbelievable.  Thanks to the revved-up fat content and underbaking, they have the ultra-moist, chewy texture that I DEMAND in an oatmeal cookie.  But, they also taste like chocolate so they satisfy every craving at once!  (I have this issue where I’m addicted to the texture of oatmeal cookies, but yet I never truly feel as if I’ve eaten dessert unless I’ve consumed some chocolate.)

On to the recipe.  Items in parentheses are optional changes that I used. YMMV.  I do highly recommend adding the instant coffee, as it really gives that ‘dark chocolate’ flavor.

Chocolate Cherry Best Oatmeal Cookies Ever

1 cup butter, softened
1 cup packed brown sugar
¾ cup white sugar (or Splenda)
2 eggs
2 tsp. vanilla extract
1 ½ cups flour (or use half Whole Wheat flour)
½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1 tsp. baking soda
½ tsp. salt
(approx. 1/2 Tbs. espresso powder or instant coffee)
3 cups oats
½ cup chopped nuts
¾ cup dried cherries + ¼ cup or so additional for topping (sour cherries are best)
½ cup dark chocolate chips
(up to 2 Tbs. milk)


1.    Heat oven to 350.

2.    Beat butter and sugars in large bowl until light and fluffy; blend in eggs and vanilla.  Stir together flour, cocoa, baking soda, salt, and espresso powder; gradually add to butter mixture, mixing very well.

3.    Stir in oats, nuts, cherries, and chips.  Batter will be very thick.  If it isn’t holding together very well, here is where you should add the optional milk.

4.    Drop dough by rounded Tablespoonfuls onto ungreased cookie sheet.  Press additional cherries onto tops of cookies.  Bake 10-11 minutes until just set.  Cookies should still be moist in center.  Do NOT overbake.

5.    Transfer to wire racks and cool.

Makes about 3-4 dozen cookies, depending on how much raw cookie dough you eat.

(Though to be back on topic, I imagine that Sidney Crosby would like these cookies.)
