I’m a political vegetable

Seriously.  I can’t take this election season any more.  It is triggering my anxiety something fierce.  Earlier this week I actually had election-related nightmares…several of them!  They were all along the lines of:  I was stuck someplace away from my home precinct and couldn’t vote, or else I dreamt that I somehow forgot about the election until after the polls had closed!  OMG, talk about waking up screaming!  If I was caught in a bear trap on election day, I would chew of my own arm so I could go vote.  I guess I inherited/learned that from my Dad, curse him.

I have an appointment for my annual physical next week and, embarrassing as it may be, I’m gonna ask my Doc for some anti-anxiety meds to last up through 11/4.  He’ll probably laugh in my face.

ANYway, one of the things I’ve been doing to try to manage my creeping terror is I’ve been volunteering with the Obama campaign once a week.  I’d thought about it for a while, but I didn’t think that there would be anything for me to do, since I refuse to make phone calls or go canvassing door-to-door.  (I would SO end up stabbing people if I tried that.  NOT an asset to the campaign.)  Then I found out that they needed some data entry people…data entry!  Now that, I can do.

It’s been pretty interesting so far.  One thing I’ve done is enter voter registrations.  I’ve seen people in their 50′s and 60′s who are registering for the first time.  I entered data for a 98-year-old woman!  (You GO, 98-year-old woman!) That stuff has been heartening.  And though most of the new registrants have been Democrats, there were 2 or 3 Repugs.  And 100% of them were young (20′s) women with airhead names (Amber, Tiffini) and cheerleader/vapid slut – style handwriting.  I’m not sure what to deduce from that.  Either:

1. Dumb skanks are so dumb they meant to register as Dems but screwed up.

2.  Dumb skanks are both dumb and evil, and meant to register as Repugs…because only dumb evil skanks register as Repugs.

I dunno.  Draw your own conclusions. :)

Another thing I’ve been doing is entering the data that the phone-calling people gather when they make their calls.  Like, “called voter #2001, he/she wasn’t home” or “spoke to voter #3007, they lean towards Obama”, etc.  It’s all very bar-coded and check-listed and organized.  So from I learn the names and addresses of any McCain supporters, and believe me, it is VERY hard to resist the temptation to abuse that knowledge and go firebomb their houses.

But overall I’m glad I’m doing this.  It’s not much at all, but I take some small comfort in being able to tell myself that, if the Unthinkable happens, at least I did something and didn’t just sit by and let them take away the country without resistance.

But I’d prefer some xanax.

I also have been volunteering at Obama’s local headquarters. I’ve made some cold calls, stuffed envelopes etc. I’m also thinking of volunteering at a polling station on election day.

I’ve been surprised at the mixture of people coming in to the office. I actually feel a small (teeny) bit of hope that people are realizing voting can make a difference.
