Harry Potter: The Beast That Ate Britain

“I saw the best minds of my generation destroyed by…”
Harry Potter?!

Yes, it’s true. I’ll come right out and say that I think the HP books are lame, and I think the movies are even lamer. But it’s the movies for which I reserve a special hatred. Why? Because for some reason, every truly brilliant and high-quality British actor gets sucked down into those vile cesspools of kiddie cheese, and it pisses me off. Look at some of the actors who have or have had parts in HP movies:

Richard Harris
Kenneth Branagh
Alan Rickman

and now Emma Thompson and Gary Oldman join for part three. Is no one safe? Is nothing sacred?! Thank god Lawrence Olivier is dead or they’d have him running around spouting goofy lines about “muggles” as well. I live in dread that Jeremy Irons, Helen Mirren, or Kate Winslet will turn up in part four. Please, make it stop!

I just see it as such a terrible, terrible waste of talent. I love movies. GOOD movies with GREAT acting, and when I think of what an absolutely tremendous film one could potentially make with these actors all together….but instead there they all are…in Harry Potter. It’s enough to make a film buff weep.

(However, it’s been so bloody long since I’ve seen Gary Oldman in anything, I most likely will be seeing “Prisoner of Azkaban.” But don’t think I won’t deeply resent it. Gawd, but I hate Hollywood.)
